16 June 2018 - Community Jazz Band Old School Assembly and the Junior Music Academy
On Saturday 16th June community jazz band Old School Assembly performed an informal lunchtime concert for the parents, families and the members of the Junior Music Academy including students from Preston Manor’s Lower School. The 6 piece group performed both instrumental and vocal music from the big band era of jazz and swing including well known standards such as ‘Summer Time’ and ‘I Get a Kick out of You!’.
Towards the end of the concert parents and families who had taken part in short jazz workshop (aiming to promote community cohesion, inclusion and the chance to play with a jazz band) performed a special educational arrangement of the Duke Ellington classic ‘Duke’s Place’ in which they played classroom percussion and sang.
The concert finished with all of the members of the Junior Music Academy performing the Dave Brubeck hit ‘Unsquare Dance’ on glockenspiels, xylophones, violins, ukuleles, cellos and hand held percussion conducted by Mr Crawley. The students performed well, especially as the piece is well known for its tricky seven in a bar counting patterns.
