To Moroco and Back!
Six students from Preston Manor VI Form travelled to Morocco as part of the ‘Leaders of Tomorrow’ programme run by ACN, Connect Stars and STYC (based in Camden Council).
Students enjoyed the adventure of a lifetime after travelling more than 1,400 miles from London Gatwick International Airport to Marrakech.
Through securing funding for the trip, the group of six Year 12 and 13 students travelled with Mr Kumaning - VI Form Pastoral Leader, and other young people from the London Borough of Camden and Kensington and Chelsea. These young leaders spent 12 days in Morocco working in local schools, orphanages, Art and Community Centres using the power of education and sports to engage local young people. As part of our sustainability promise, we also successfully carried out an environmental clean-up which turned out to be beneficial.
This was an amazing trip which encouraged our students to learn about the local needs of young people from abroad and use their voice to challenge the Deputy Minister of Culture and Youth at Parliament Royaume Du Maroc about development programmes to support the uprising of young leaders in Morocco.
New educational materials such as stationery, laptops, Ipad and reading books were purchased to support the learning journey of children at The Centre Protection of Children and School of Daadiaa in Bensiliame. In addition, a large amount of clean clothing and footwear were donated to local children in the community.
The trip ended with young leaders being treated to a two-hour hike to the mountains in Sti Fadma to witness the beautiful waterfall and to take part in an adventurous quad bike and camel ride in the desert.
Congratulations to all those who participated and thank you to all staff, parents and students who supported the trip by donating financially.
Deputy Head Boy Lamar Miller said, “Having the chance to connect with like-minded young people has not only shown me how ideas can become a reality but also how a passionate young leader can give back to those less fortunate in the best way possible”.
As a result of this educational and insightful trip, many individuals such as Varniga Paramananthan, who won the most improved and outstanding young leaders award felt as if “This trip has been a life-changing experience for me. I have created the best memories, which I will cherish for the rest of my life. I feel very lucky to have been chosen to participate in this project”.

“Opportunities to travel and take on international volunteering or study experiences are more important now than ever before and represent a valuable asset when shaping young people’s leadership skills”. - Mr Kumaning
