STEM Waterways workshop

On Thursday 4 June, 20 Year 10 students took part in an inspiring two-hour STEM Waterways workshop delivered by Mrs Nowrujee Ali and her team from the Canal & River Trust.
The session introduced them to the important role of the UK’s canal network in supporting transport, water supply, flood protection and environmental management. They explored current challenges linked to the UK water crisis, including drought, flooding, water waste and inefficiency.
Working in teams, the students were challenged to design innovative solutions using canals to help preserve, manage and conserve water. They considered both low-tech and high-tech ideas, such as valves, barriers, pumps, sensors, solar power and AI, before producing posters and presenting their proposals to the group. The workshop encouraged creativity, problem-solving, teamwork and communication, while helping students see how engineering can be used to tackle real-world environmental challenges.
