Art and Design: Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

Our art and design curriculum, delivered through Kapow Primary, is ambitious, knowledge-rich and carefully sequenced to ensure all pupils learn more, remember more and know more. We aim to inspire creativity and self-expression while teaching pupils powerful knowledge about artists, designers, techniques and materials. High expectations and a focus on beautiful work enable pupils to take pride in their outcomes, develop confidence and communicate ideas using appropriate artistic language.

Implementation

Art and design is taught through the Kapow Primary scheme, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum through a progressive sequence of skills and knowledge. Lessons are carefully structured, building on prior learning and informed by Rosenshine’s Principles, including clear modelling, guided practice and regular review. Pupils are explicitly taught key vocabulary, techniques and processes. Teaching is adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including SEND pupils, and assessment is purposeful and aligned with curriculum intent. Oracy is deliberately embedded within lessons. Structured critique and discussion enable pupils to evaluate artists’ work, articulate their own ideas and provide constructive feedback using subject-specific vocabulary. This strengthens pupils’ visual literacy, reasoning and confidence in discussing artistic decisions.

Impact

Pupils develop a secure understanding of artistic techniques, styles and processes and can talk confidently about their own work and the work of others. They demonstrate creativity, resilience and pride in their outcomes, meet age-related expectations and are well-prepared to continue their artistic learning in the next stage of education.
