Intent

Our science curriculum is ambitious, knowledge-rich and inclusive, ensuring all pupils are entitled to powerful scientific knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Guided by the Kent Scheme of Learning, we set high expectations and insist on exceptional work, enabling pupils to think and work like scientists through curiosity, practical experiments, critical thinking and secure disciplinary knowledge. Literacy and precise scientific vocabulary are embedded so pupils can articulate ideas clearly and confidently as informed, responsible citizens


Implementation

Science is taught through the Kent Scheme of Learning, providing a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum that meets and goes beyond the National Curriculum. Learning builds cumulatively in substantive knowledge and disciplinary skills, including working scientifically, enquiry, observation, prediction, testing and evaluation. Teaching is informed by Rosenshine’s Principles, with regular retrieval of prior learning, clear modelling of scientific methods and frequent checks for understanding. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including SEND pupils, and assessment is rigorous and aligned with curriculum intent. Oracy is being embedded within science lessons to deepen understanding and develop confident communicators. Through structured discussions, pupils explain their thinking, justify predictions using evidence and respond thoughtfully to the ideas of others. By linking these discussions to real-world contexts, children are supported to connect their scientific learning to the world around them.


Impact

Pupils develop secure scientific knowledge and skills, can plan and carry out enquiries, analyse results and explain their thinking using precise scientific vocabulary. They demonstrate enthusiasm, curiosity, resilience and pride in high-quality outcomes, meet age-related expectations and are well prepared for the next stage of education as confident, reflective and knowledgeable young scientists.
