Design and Technology
Design & Technology: Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
Our Design and Technology curriculum is ambitious and knowledge-rich, ensuring all pupils, regardless of background, have access to powerful knowledge and develop the skills needed to design, make and evaluate purposeful products. We set high expectations and insist on beautiful work, enabling pupils to think creatively, solve problems and become confident, responsible designers. Literacy and subject-specific vocabulary are embedded so pupils can communicate ideas clearly and speak like experts.
Implementation
Design and Technology is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that meets and goes beyond the National Curriculum. Learning builds progressively in technical knowledge, design skills and understanding of materials, structures, mechanisms and food technology. Teaching is informed by Rosenshine’s Principles, with regular review of prior learning, clear modelling and frequent checks for understanding. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including SEND pupils, and assessment is rigorous and aligned to curriculum intent.
Impact
Pupils develop strong practical and technical skills, alongside the ability to design thoughtfully, evaluate critically and articulate their ideas using appropriate vocabulary. They demonstrate creativity, resilience and pride in their work, meet age-related expectations and are well prepared for the next stage of education as capable, reflective and responsible designers.
