PSHE: Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
Our PSHE curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and knowledge-rich, ensuring all pupils are entitled to powerful knowledge about health, relationships, wellbeing and citizenship. We set high expectations for conduct and self-reflection, enabling pupils to develop the character, values and life skills needed to thrive as responsible, respectful and successful members of society. PSHE plays a central role in nurturing resilience, empathy, metacognition and a strong sense of self-worth.
Implementation
PSHE is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that meets statutory requirements for Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and goes beyond through rich opportunities for discussion, reflection and real-life application. We use 1Decision for its insightful and reflective videos to encourage children to reason about good choices. We have regular circle times for further discussions or to address current issues. Teaching is informed by Rosenshine’s Principles, with regular review of prior learning, clear modelling of respectful dialogue and frequent checks for understanding. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, including SEND learners, and are supported by a positive classroom climate aligned to the school’s behaviour policy. Assessment is purposeful and aligned to curriculum intent.
Impact
Pupils develop secure knowledge of how to keep themselves safe, healthy and emotionally well, and demonstrate respect for others in line with school values. We give children opportunities to think, provide solutions and develop empathy for their peers, the environment and the world around them. They communicate thoughtfully, make informed choices and show resilience in the face of challenge. Pupils meet age-related expectations and are well-prepared for the next stage of education as confident, responsible and reflective young people.
