History: Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

Our history curriculum is ambitious, knowledge-rich and inclusive, ensuring all pupils are entitled to powerful knowledge of the past and its impact on the present. We set high expectations and insist on high quality learning, enabling pupils to think critically, ask historically valid questions and communicate like historians. We explore significant people, events in British History and World History. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils develop a secure understanding of chronology, diversity, change and continuity, preparing them to become informed, responsible citizens.

Implementation

History is taught through a coherent and progressive curriculum that meets and goes beyond the National Curriculum. Learning builds cumulatively in substantive knowledge and disciplinary skills, including chronology, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, and interpretation of sources. Teaching is informed by Rosenshine’s Principles, with regular retrieval of prior learning, clear modelling and frequent checks for understanding. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including SEND pupils, and assessment is rigorous and aligned with curriculum intent.

Impact

Pupils develop a secure and coherent understanding of key historical periods and concepts, can analyse sources critically and articulate their ideas using subject-specific vocabulary. They demonstrate curiosity, resilience and pride in high-quality outcomes, meet age-related expectations and are well prepared for the next stage of their education as thoughtful, reflective and informed historians.
