Spanish
Spanish: Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
Our Spanish curriculum is ambitious and inclusive, ensuring all pupils are entitled to powerful knowledge of a modern foreign language and the cultural capital it provides. We set high expectations so that pupils develop confidence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish, building curiosity about other cultures and strengthening their literacy, memory and communication skills as successful learners and responsible global citizens.
Implementation
Spanish is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds progressively in vocabulary, phonics and grammar, enabling pupils to revisit and deepen learning over time. Lessons prioritise oracy, accurate pronunciation and purposeful practice, with clear modelling. Teaching is underpinned by Rosenshine’s Principles, with frequent checks for understanding, structured practice and high-quality verbal feedback. Assessment is aligned to curriculum intent and used to inform teaching.
Impact
Pupils develop secure foundations in Spanish, communicate simple ideas with increasing confidence and accuracy, and use subject-specific vocabulary appropriately. They show curiosity about languages and cultures, meet age-related expectations and are well prepared for the next stage of language learning, demonstrating resilience, pride in their work and growing independence as learners.
