Lifting Legacies: Black Heritage & STEM Engineering Field Trip

On Tuesday 13 January, selected Year 10 students took part in an engaging educational visit to London, exploring Black heritage, social justice and STEM engineering.
At the Museum of London Docklands, students learned about Britain’s maritime history and the transatlantic slave trade, supporting our Lifting Legacies work by reflecting on the lasting impact of slavery.
The group then visited Glengall Bridge, where students saw the hydraulic mechanisms used to open the bridge in action, bringing engineering principles to life. The trip was generously provided by the Canal & River Trust, and students had the valuable opportunity to speak directly with the charity’s CEO, who accompanied the group, as well as the trip leader working for the organisation.
Overall, the trip was a memorable and enriching experience that deepened students’ understanding of Black history, showcased real-world engineering, and broadened their awareness of future career pathways.
