Physical Education
Physical Education: Intent, Implementation and Impact
Intent
Our PE curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and knowledge-rich, ensuring all pupils are entitled to the physical, social and cognitive benefits of sport and exercise. We set high expectations so that pupils develop confidence, resilience, coordination and teamwork, alongside a lifelong understanding of health, fitness and wellbeing. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to become active, responsible and successful citizens.
Implementation
PE is taught through Complete PE, delivering a progressive and sequenced curriculum that develops fundamental movement skills, sports-specific techniques and personal fitness. Lessons build on prior learning, challenge pupils to improve performance, and embed the values of teamwork, fair play and perseverance. Teaching is informed by Rosenshine’s Principles, with clear modelling, guided practice, structured questioning and frequent assessment of skill development. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, including those with SEND, while maintaining high expectations. Oracy is used to articulate strategies, explain tactics and reflect on performance.
Active play is promoted at break and lunch through access to equipment and pupil leadership opportunities, reinforcing independence and sustained physical activity beyond lessons. At break, Commando Joe provides additional structured physical challenges that develop resilience, leadership, communication and teamwork. It complements PE by enabling pupils to apply personal and collaborative skills in physically demanding contexts.
Impact
Pupils develop secure physical skills, demonstrate resilience, confidence and teamwork, and apply knowledge of fitness, health and wellbeing to improve performance. They make strong progress, enjoy participating in a range of physical activities, meet age-related expectations, and are well prepared to lead active, healthy lives while contributing positively to school and wider communities.
